A community project based at St Augustine’s, Dumbarton, which encourages former heroin addicts to lead drug-free lives, was short-listed for the Local Heroes Award run by the Evening Times newspaper.
Families United, working in conjunction with the local congregation, run a family support group for parents of users and a daily drop-in for young people trying to free themselves from methadone maintenance.
The group of volunteers who run the project along with the Rector of St Augustine’s, Fr Kenny Macaulay, were nominated in the Health and Wellbeing category.
Helen Mackenzie, secretary of Families United Support Group, said: “I would like to thank Fr Kenny and the congregation at St Augustine’s. The support they have provided to Families United Support Group in the past two years has had such an impact in our community.”
