It is a weighty task which we begin today.
We are to choose a chief pastor for this diocese – a leader of mission for God’s people. We shall seek a person who by prayer and example, by manner of life and quality of character can be an inspiration to the clergy and people of this diocese and a sign of the presence of Christ in the world.
It is a weighty task which we begin today.
I am sure that you – like me – are keenly aware of the responsibility which we hold. We feel concerned about the risk of ‘getting it wrong’
Yes it is a weighty thing which we begin today.
Yet readings remind us that, if we are preoccupied with our choosing, we may get in the way of God’s choosing. Our task is to recognise God’s choice. It is a task of vocational discernment. We approach our task in prayerful humility – believing that our task is to discern the will of God.
May the Spirit of Truth guide us into all truth.
May we discern what the Lord wills.
And may God be glorified.
