Meeting held to discuss Anglican Covenant

Posted Thursday 22 October 2009

On Tuesday 6 October 2009 a diverse group of lay people and clergy met to prepare a diocesan response to the latest draft of the Anglican Covenant.

At its last meeting the Anglican Consultative Committee agreed the wording of all but one of the sections of the proposed covenant, but asked for comments on Section 4 - Our Covenanted Life Together.  This section deals with the steps and actions to be taken if a province undertakes a course of action which could put it outwith the terms of the convenant.

In order for the Provincial Faith and Order Board to make a response within the timescale it was not possible for the Diocesan Synod to agree a formal submission and so this meeting was held in order to gather reaction and responses.

Some individuals, vestries and other groups provided written submissions.  The discussion was facilitated by the Dean, the Very Revd Gregor Duncan and the Revd Canon James Milne set the discussion in context and gave an account of progress so far.

The attached document provides a record of the discussion and also the written submissions which were made before and after the meeting.

This response has been passed to the Provincial Faith and Order Board to inform the compilation of the SEC response.
