A large congregation gathered at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral to mark Bishop Idris’ retirement as he celebrated the Eucharist for the last time at the cathedral as Bishop.
The Dean, the Very Revd Gregor Duncan preached the sermon and at the end of the service there was a presentation to Bishop Idris and Alison of a picture to hang in their new home in Largs.
The Revd Kjell Blomberg, a Dean in the Diocese of Gothenburg, brought greetings from Bishop Carl Axel and a gift from our linked diocese. He said that Bishop Carl Axel had said that there were two things that had recommended the link to our Diocese from Gothenburg. One was Ryanair and the other was that the Bishop Idris seemed like a nice chap!
The gift from Gothenburg was a modern sculpture of a boat representing friendship - although Kjell was slightly concerned that Idris was settling in Largs - a place with some unhappy memories for Vikings. “After all”, he said, “perhaps if the Battle of Largs had turned out differently then Glasgow might be part of the Diocese of Gothenburg!”.
At the end of the service Bishop Idris placed the cathedral crozier and mitre on the altar as he laid down his role as diocesan bishop.
After the service the congregation gathered for refreshments
