Sixteen candles signifying 16 days of action for the Elimination of Violence against Women
Hope was signified by a cross lit with 16 candles which had at its centre a dark wooden cross to signify the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, who offers salvation to all who believe in Him and empowers believers to be His Light in the world, writes Ann Glenesk.
The 16 candles signify the 16 days of action for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which includes World Aids Day.
The ecumenical service, led by Rev Shelley Marsh, was held at St James the Less, Bishopbriggs, on Sunday 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
God is love and as the people of the churches are God’s light in the world hope was expressed they too will demonstrate love for women subjected to violence. To do so it would be necessary to work in partnership with agencies such as Women’s Aid. Hope was also expressed that Churches be willing to struggle with the questions about faith raised by the experience of violence for women, children and men.
A member of staff from the local Women’s Refuge read a story written by a 15 year old boy who with his mother and sisters was a survivor of abuse. The determination and conviction expressed in the story left no-one in doubt that with God there is hope.
